Oklahoma Crushing

Ok, being home sometimes drives me crazy. But I am definitely rekindling my love affair with Oklahoma. While the conservative political and social elements of this place drive me crazy, and while the small-towness of Oklahoma City seems in desperate need of ironic examination, there is still so much to love.

Such as the bigness of the sky. I think the wide horizon is the best thing about this city and state. Every sunset is like a singles date at a drive-in movie theater; a theater showing some artsy film with slowly blurring colors. And the storms! Thunder and lightening. And rolling lightening without rain. And rain from sunny sky. Although, usually, it only rains at night just like Camelot.

Also, retreat and recreation at Lake Hiwasse. I just bought a slalom ski and am waiting to pick up this new trick. Nothing beats an afternoon letting a paddle boat float aimlessly around our small cove.

I’m even listening to Oklahoma music. Such as K.C. Clifford a singer-song writer who graduated from my high school (holla Chargers!). And while the sound is unabashedly girly, knowing that the music was imagined, produced and performed in Oklahoma makes that all ok.

And I just discovered great Oklahoma blogs that write about this place with the sardonic lens I find absent elsewhere.

The most surprising? I went to a Redhawks baseball game in Bricktown and actually enjoyed myself. Me enjoying baseball? Or was it the temperature of the evening, the all-American hamburger I ate or the conversation between pitches and walked batters?

  1. I don’t know about Oklahoma music, roads, or rednecks. But, the Oklahoma sunsets, downtown activities, overall “family feeling,” lakes, and openness fucking rock.

  2. Amen!

Amazing Oklahoma sunsets are twice as stunning reflected off the surface of one of our many lakes.

  3. Thanks for the post
